Counter allegations training for domestic abuse professionals, designed to help identify the primary perpetrator, understand manipulative perpetrator tactics, and respond to complex cases with confidence.
Our counter allegations training aims to support you to:
This one-day Counter-Allegations training course is designed to support professionals to respond confidently and effectively in complex domestic abuse cases where allegations are made by both parties, or where identifying the primary perpetrator is unclear.
Grounded in evidence and practice, the course explores the dynamics that sit beneath counter-allegations. Learners will develop a deeper understanding of how abuse operates within relationships, and how context, intent and impact must be considered when assessing risk and making decisions.
Through practical tools, case studies and structured approaches, this course equips professionals to identify the primary perpetrator, recognise when perpetrators may present as victims, and respond appropriately when information shifts or evolves. It also highlights the significant risks associated with misidentification, including reduced victim safety, loss of trust in services, and increased harm to adults and children.
At SafeLives, we recognise that domestic abuse is rarely straightforward. This course is designed to strengthen professional curiosity, support defensible decision-making, and ensure responses are rooted in a clear understanding of “who is doing what to whom”, ultimately improving outcomes for victims, survivors and families.
This course supports IDVAs, ISVAs and specialist domestic abuse practitioners to strengthen their ability to assess complex relationship dynamics and advocate effectively for victims. It provides practical tools to challenge misidentification, articulate patterns of coercive control, and ensure victims are accurately represented within multi-agency settings such as MARAC.
For police officers and staff, this course enhances frontline and investigative decision-making where counter-allegations are present. It supports officers to gather the full picture, apply professional curiosity, and identify the primary perpetrator in line with evidence and CPS expectations. The training also strengthens confidence in managing cases where perpetrators seek to manipulate processes, ensuring robust, victim-focused outcomes.
For professionals in social care, health, housing and wider safeguarding roles, this course builds confidence in understanding and contributing to cases involving counter-allegations. It supports practitioners to recognise patterns of abuse, avoid collusion with perpetrator narratives, and work collaboratively to ensure the right person is identified and the right interventions are put in place across the partnership response.
The course is one day (9:30 am – 4:30 pm) online via Zoom.
You must be working with victims of domestic abuse to complete this course. (Preferably a qualified IDVA).
This course is £100 per learner
