The Safer, Sooner Domestic Abuse Network events in 2023

29 February 2024 Network Event

This network event was structured around LGBTQ+ young people’s experiences of domestic abuse: in their own relationships and within families. Professionals heard about a youth participation project delivered by LGBT Youth Scotland called ‘Voices Unheard’.

In 2022/23, Voices Unheard co-developed and delivered a peer consultation to better understand LGBTQ+ young people in Scotland’s experiences of domestic abuse. The consultation found that LGBTQ+ young people in Scotland experience high rates of domestic abuse, both within their own relationships and within their families, but face multiple barriers to accessing support or reporting abuse to Police.

There was guest speaker input from LGBT Youth Scotland Development Officer, Janice Stevenson who was joined by some young people from the Voices Unheard group who presented an overview of their key findings from the consultation, as well as their key recommendations to improve outcomes for young LGBTQ+ survivors.

Network member attendees reflected on the findings from the consultation and discussed current barriers and challenges to LGBTQ+ inclusion. They considered possible actions we can all take, in our practice, our services, and our organisations, to better meet the needs of LGBTQ+ young people and the wider LGBTQ+ community.
