Course overview

Our ‘Working with families impacted by domestic abuse’ course is ideal for frontline professionals who work with multiple members of a family where domestic abuse is occurring.

Throughout the sessions, learners will explore the different dynamics of domestic abuse, with a focus on how non-physical forms of abuse can manifest.

The course aims to help professionals make accurate and trauma-informed assessments of the dynamics of abuse within a household and learn how to work effectively with the abusive parent, non-abusive parent, and children.

Learners will also understand the importance of multi-agency working to ensure that families get appropriate and effective support.

Learners will engage with discussions, case studies and skills practice to ensure they are ready to apply the learning to their real-world practice.

The training presented new models and was able to contextualise familiar models (eg: motivational interviewing) in the scope of domestic abuse which was really helpful to the team.

Time commitment

This course can be delivered in a 2-day or 4-day format.

  • Both courses can be delivered online, in person or as hybrid.
  • Each day runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
  • The 4-day course is delivered in two, 2-day blocks.
  • The 2-day format provides a general overview.
  • The 4-day format is a more comprehensive course, with more time given to each topic and more opportunities for skills practice.

I will be able to hold case discussions in a more reflective way through a trauma-informed lens, and be mindful of why this is important to staff and for clients. Understanding the viewpoints and agendas of different agencies and how they can impact a client's journey is also going to be something I draw on for future practice.
