An open letter from SafeLives Pioneers and Changemakers

We are SafeLives Pioneers and Changemakers. We are a diverse group of women and young people from different backgrounds and we are resilient overcomers of domestic abuse and violence.

We reject the argument of those engaged in violent and abusive behaviour, involving racism and Islamophobia on Britain's streets, that they are doing so to protect women and girls. We do not need them to use us as an excuse to terrorise communities -  especially Muslim, racialised, migrant and refugee women and young people.

These abhorrent actions not only violate the fundamental principles of human dignity and respect, but also perpetuate division and hatred within our communities. They make the streets of our country less safe for all women and girls. They will also have a damaging impact on the next generation, including in their own families.

Mainstream media needs to name these as racist attacks, rather than ‘unrest’ or ‘protests’. It is imperative to recognise that such attacks do nothing to protect girls and women; in fact, they exacerbate fear, insecurity, and marginalisation for all. We unequivocally condemn these vile acts of violence and bigotry.

Our commitment is to stand in solidarity with those targeted and to work tirelessly towards a society where everyone, regardless of their race, religion, or background, is afforded the safety, respect, and equality they deserve.

Like the scourge of domestic abuse, this situation needs all of society to change things for the better. Let us come together to reject hatred in all its forms and to build a future grounded in understanding, compassion, and unity.

In Love & Light,
