New ITV documentary, Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors, sheds light on domestic abuse and the transformative power of survivor voice

Over the past year, SafeLives has worked closely with the all-female production company Love Monday to shine a light on domestic abuse and the remarkable survivors who, by sharing their experiences, are transforming how we respond to this insidious crime.

This documentary offers viewers insight into how Her Majesty’s support is helping to change public perception of domestic abuse, bringing it out from behind closed doors and opening up the conversation.

Ellen Miller, CEO of SafeLives, said:

For more than 20 years, SafeLives has been creating spaces where survivors can speak their truth, embrace their strength, and lead change. We’re delighted to see this celebrated through this inspiring film, capturing the transformative power of survivor voice.

As shown in the programme, the Queen’s commitment to ending domestic abuse goes back to 2016, when she attended a SafeLives event and heard first-hand from survivors. I know that was a powerful moment for Her Majesty - seeing survivors speak their truth, some for the very first time. Since then, she has been an advocate for victims of abuse, amplifying their voices at the highest level and helping us to transform the response on a national scale.

Survivors of abuse often feel isolated and silenced, but Her Majesty’s genuine compassion and engagement sends a resounding message: your voices matter and deserve to be heard.

In 2020, Her Majesty became Patron of SafeLives and her involvement continues to bring critical, national attention to the issue of domestic abuse - reminding us that it is everyone’s business and should never be allowed to thrive behind closed doors.

We are hugely grateful for her long-standing allyship in our ambition to end domestic abuse for everyone, for good.

A number of domestic abuse survivors bravely share their lived experience in the documentary. Survivor voice is at the heart of the work we do at SafeLives, and this powerful film reminds us all that lasting change begins with listening to and amplifying their voices.

Shana Begum, a SafeLives Pioneer and Trustee features in the programme, where she shares her perspective on campaigning to end domestic abuse:

It’s not our shame to carry. I’m not a victim. I’m a survivor. And proud to be.

SafeLives Pioneers are experts by experience, we’re embedding our perspectives in systems all across the UK. And this documentary serves as a call to everyone watching - to champion our voices and be part of the solution.

I hope this powerful film reaches behind closed doors and into people’s homes, sparking conversations that lead to change. Domestic abuse is everyone’s problem. Together, we can make it stop.

The documentary also features an intimate roundtable with Her Majesty and SafeLives Changemakers at Buckingham Palace in Spring 2024. The Changemakers are a dynamic group of young people who share a passion to end domestic abuse and tackle the social challenges facing today’s youth.

Her Majesty invited the group to the Palace to discuss the power of young people’s voices in transforming responses to domestic abuse and ways we can work together to stop abuse before it starts.

Reflecting on the roundtable discussion, the SafeLives Changemakers group said:

Meeting Her Majesty at the Palace was an unforgettable experience. It was a chance to share our vision for the future - where young voices are not just heard but drive real change.

Too often, young people are not taken seriously, but having this discussion at the Palace showed us that our voices matter.

Her Majesty’s support sends a powerful message—that young people have a vital role to play in promoting healthy relationships and tackling domestic abuse.
