My Isva saved my life

As part of our 16 Days 2024 campaign, a SafeLives Changemaker reflects on the life-changing impact of specialist support for young survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.

Ypvas are so important to young people and their comfortableness in getting the resources they need to heal and move forward in life after such disturbing events like domestic violence.

Ypvas are a vital support system to young people going through domestic abuse and other harmful situations, helping them to survive truly awful circumstances.

It is horrific to think that these jobs have to exist, but they are crucial in making this world safer for young people. For those that unfortunately need to use this service, it is critical.

Like Ypvas, there is another job in this sector that is extremely important – one that I have experience with, and they are Independent Sexual Violence Advisers (Isvas).

Like Ypvas, Isvas help young people who have experienced sexual violence. They support you through the experience - helping you navigate your own healing journey, and the process of reporting abuse if you want to.

They can, for example, press the right people for updates and walk you through how our criminal justice system works. They can also support you with making a report to police, taking you through the options you have and supporting you to make the decision that is right for you. And only you.

My Isva saved my life.

When I reported to the police, my Isva chased and chased my case for the nearly two years it was being conducted. She talked me through everything and helped me understand the system.

She was a massive part of my recovery and was more than just an Isva. She was a shoulder to cry on, someone to rant to, to help get my frustrations out about the situation I was in and most importantly someone I could go to for anything – who would be there for me, with no judgement.

For the people that work with young survivors of domestic abuse, sexual abuse and other terrible events, thank you.

Thank you for saving so many young people and advocating for us, it is such a heavy thing to deal with and you are vital to the network of support that all survivors need and should have access to.

You matter so much, and your work is incredible.

About SafeLives Changemakers

The Changemakers are a group of dedicated young people who share a passion to end domestic abuse and tackle the social challenges facing today’s youth. Ranging in ages, from 13-21, the Changemakers are based across the UK and provide a safe and inclusive environment for young voices to share their opinions and experiences.

The name Changemakers was chosen by the young people because the group gives a voice to those who are often overlooked, ignored or silenced when talking about important issues. It serves as a reminder and promise that their voices are powerful and can help create significant change.
